Astonished at His Authority

At the close of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 7:28–29, the crowds are left astonished—not merely by what Jesus says, but by the authority with which he says it. Unlike the scribes, Jesus speaks with an authority entirely his own. Throughout the rest of Matthew’s gospel Jesus’ authority is displayed as he heals the sick, stills the storm, casts out demons, forgives sin, and commands death itself. Matthew concludes declaring that the risen Lord Jesus holds all authority in heaven and earth.
