In Matthew 8:1–17, three portraits hang side by side—an outcast leper, an oppressor's servant, an overlooked mother—and each one shows us Jesus the redeemer and healer, moving with power, authority, and compassion. Wherever he goes a great reversal unfolds: what sin has broken, he has the authority to make right. By the power of his word and his touch, the shamed and outcast are restored, the distant are welcomed in, and the sick are healed. Matthew declares that this healing, freely given, is costly to Jesus—the suffering servant who took our illnesses and bore our diseases, suffering outside the gate to make us clean by his own blood.
