Matthew opens his Gospel by announcing a new beginning—a new “genesis”—centered on Jesus Christ, the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. Through the genealogy, Matthew shows that Jesus is God’s promised King who brings blessing to the nations and fulfills God’s long-awaited covenant promises. Even in a family line marked by outsiders, suffering, and sin, God’s faithfulness shines as He brings forth the Savior in the fullness of time.
