Matthew was a tax collector—wealthy, dishonest, and despised—the last man anyone expected Jesus to want, and yet Jesus walked up to his booth and simply said, "Follow me." Where the Pharisees kept their distance from such people, Jesus went straight into the mess, because the great physician came not for those who think they're healthy but for those who know they are sick. That is the wonder of God's kingdom: Jesus came all the way to us, calling not the righteous but sinners, and there is room at his table for anyone who knows they need his mercy.
